Sustainability

5 Rs (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot)

Sustainability starts with you. Each of us can make small decisions with big impacts toward curbing climate change and for the betterment of our earth. If you don’t know where to begin, following the 5 Rs mantra is always a good guide to practice.

Refuse:

Refusing single-use commodities such as straws, packaging, utensils, containers, etc. Refusing all the non-essentials can practically eliminate your trash.

Reduce:

With the reliance on today’s conveniences, refusing isn’t always an option but by reducing those non-essentials or by making more conscience chooses, your reduction will have major impact. Think Minimalism.

Reuse:

The key here is to look at what you currently use that is disposable. What can be replaced with reusable products? Even though the initial investment may be larger upfront, these reusables will save money and landfill space in the future.

Recycle:

When you can’t refuse or reduce or reuse… PLEASE, PLEASE, Recycle! Depending on the area where you live, there are wide differences in what you can recycle. Check locally and try to recycle as much as you can no matter if you are at home or traveling.

The idea of GreenPolly bags came from this mantra! Our bags are 80-90% made from recycled plastic. Trash bags, poop bags and recycling bags are “essential” for some, so we wanted to offer up a better choice for these activities.

Rot (compost):

Think of all compostables and food waste, not as waste, but a valuable resource! Find a local community garden in your area that turns food scraps into compost or create your own nutrient-rich soil with a compost bin in your backyard. Not sure where to start, visit our friends at BioBag!
